“ARE YOU SURE there’s no way I can persuade you to do it today?” Holden asked, speaking into his cell phone as he walked down the hall of the Albany County Courthouse toward the sheriff’s department.

“Sorry, man. No can do,” Trevor said. “I’m in Cheyenne, visiting my mother, and there is no way I’m driving back to Laramie in this weather.”

Holden turned left down the next hall. “But it’s Phil Pace we’re talking about.” Just as he’d suspected, Phil had listed the Crombie residence on the bail agreement.

“I’d love nothing more than to get my hands on that weasel and wring his neck, but I can’t do it today. No one in their right mind would in this weather. I’ll be back the day after tomorrow.”

Two doors down another corridor, he came to the open set of double doors with Sheriff’s Department stenciled on the front and waltzed inside.

“That’s too late.” Holden would have his warrant before then.

“I don’t know what else to tell you. Sorry.”

He pushed through the half door at the reception counter and acknowledged Mitch Cody with a nod. “Yep. Thanks anyway.” He hung up and put away his cell.

Mitch got up from his desk and cut across the room, headed toward him.

Even his bail bondsman wasn’t willing to venture out in this storm. “The Honorable Judge Don Rumpke.” The judge was going to love seeing Holden with hat in hand tomorrow morning. Not wanting to rehash everything with Mitch since he’d have to do so when he updated the sheriff, he changed the subject. “What did you find?”

“I have ten names for you,” Mitch said.

Jeez, that sounded like a lot. Holden had expected five, tops. He took the list from Mitch and looked it over. “Why are people divided into two columns? What’s AM and DV?”

“Anger management and domestic violence.”

Weren’t they both about anger? “What’s the difference?”

“I don’t know. One’s about beating up people in bars and throwing a fit at work while the other is about beating your spouse?”

“We should probably ask a professional.” The distinction seemed important. He picked up the phone and called Dr. Jennings over at the Turning Point clinic. His voice mail picked up, stating that he was retiring and referring all calls to Lynn. Great. Holden looked up his cell phone number and tried that.

The call was answered on the second ring. “Hello.”

“Dr. Jennings, this is Chief Deputy Holden Powell. I had a quick question. I’m going to put you on speaker. I have Deputy Mitch Cody with me.”

“All right.”

He hit the speaker button and put down the receiver. “We know Lynn was treating people in the anger management and domestic violence programs. What’s the difference between the two?”

“Well, in the former, the
